SAVE to Release Comprehensive Report on Ragging in India on March 24

March 21, 2024 — On March 24, observed globally as the International Day for the Right to the Truth, the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE) will release its comprehensive report titled ‘State of Ragging in India 2022-24’. This report presents data from over 3,100 complaints registered with the National Anti-Ragging Helpline and highlights troubling trends in Indian educational institutions.

The report identifies institutions with the highest number of ragging complaints and reveals that medical colleges are disproportionately affected, accounting for 38.6% of all complaints despite medical students making up only 1.1% of India’s student population. The report further highlights that 51 students lost their lives to ragging between 2022-2024, a figure that is alarmingly close to the 57 suicides reported in Kota during the same period.

“Every year we get lists of India’s best colleges and universities,” said Gaurav Singhal, Vice President, SAVE. “This year, let us also get a list of colleges and universities that report the most number of ragging cases. We cannot afford to overlook this crisis any longer.”

The report calls for urgent reforms such as accepting anonymous complaints, ensuring CCTV surveillance in hostels, and establishing Anti-Ragging Squads with dedicated security personnel whose contact details are available to freshers.

“Ragging is always a topic of discussion only when a serious case comes out in the media,” said Ajay Govind, National Secretary for Awareness & Advocacy at SAVE. “With this report, we hope to bring the issue to the spotlight in a way that makes all stakeholders pay attention and think about ways to create ragging-free campuses.”

SAVE’s report will be available for public access on March 24, 2024.
